-It is very important to create conditions for collaborative learning to overcome the usual borders between stakeholders. Together with concepts of reflexive governance and ecosystem services for poverty alleviation this kind of learning is at the very heart of the SUS-programme, says Martin Westin, coordinator at SWEDESD.

The SWEDESD Newsletter includes examples of SWEDESD’s recent work. They show that collaborative learning produces worthwhile outcomes and prepares individuals and organizations for longer-term results. The SWEDESD Newsletter will be issued quarterly with planned releases in December 2011, March, June, September and December 2012.

SWEDESD enjoys early signs of capacity development in the SUS programme, including new and deepened relations between stakeholders in each of the six cities; uptake of SUS-innovations in participating organisations; policy shifts (see for example correspondence regarding a draft policy from Dhaka) and enhanced networks for exchange of knowledge among the participating cities.

Durban Adaptation Charter signed

James Nxumalo, Mayor of Durban, host city of COP 17/CMP 7 and the President of ICLEI, Mr David Cadman.


History was written in early December when 114 mayors and other elected local leaders representing over 950 local governments from around the world, came together in the signing of the Durban Adaptation Charter, a political commitment to strengthen local resilience to climate change.

During November SWEDESD and its partners organized three regional workshops in Grahamstown (South Africa), Malmö (Sweden) and Ahmedabad. The African and Asian workshops were co-organized with SADC-REEP and CEE.

Pressinbjudan - Internationella utbildare besöker SWEDESD

Under en två veckors workshop från den 5 till den 16 december träffas utbildare från Europa och Afrika i Visby för att byta idéer, lära av varandra och utveckla ett progressivt utbildningsmaterial för hållbar utveckling. Gruppen som består av 15 personer kommer att samla inspiration från andra experter inom området lärande för hållbar utveckling (ESD). Besökarna kommer från Jönköping, Visby, Zambia och Sydafrika.

SWEDESD together with CEE, facilitated a workshop in the SUS-programme in Ahmedabad on November 28th and 29th. The SUS programme Ahmedabad team told about the process of planning around the Saijpur lake in Ahmedabad. The most significant achievement is perhaps the fact that no informal settlers will be evicted when the lake has been restored
