This international workshop of practitioners and researchers was created to explore and synthesize what is known about an effective pedagogy for sustainable development, i.e. a pedagogy that has a transformative effect on individual and collective behaviour contributing to sustainability. The approach was to provide a space to reflect on experience, and to develop new solutions in co-operation with other leading edge researchers and practitioners.
The workshop was building on recent ESD explorations to lay the basis for a new platform for learning and action for sustainable development. It is expected that subsequent to the workshop some participants will organize similar workshops in their countries or regions, thus contributing to an ongoing process of learning and sharing within and between regions. Participants and the WorkshopAttending the workshop were a total of 60 participants representing universities, schools, ministries of education, local authorities, NGOs and private organizations within 32 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin & Central America, North America and Europe.
The participants brought with them a brief description of the ESD-like activity, project or program they are or have been involved in as well as a brief analysis of its possible outcomes and results and the factors that have contributed to these outcomes and results. In order to enrich the exchange of and the reflection on the experience represented by these case descriptions, the organisers aimed to bring together participants with different experiences in terms of their provenance, background, culture and personal characteristics. The aim was also for a balance between researchers and practitioners and between men and women.
Upon their return home a number of participants are expected to, with the support of SWEDESD and GAP International, organize one or more regional workshops along the “pattern laboratory” lines.
This area is only accessible for participants in the workshop.
